Artists in Residence program launched for iSummit ‘07

iSummit, created at the iCommons Summit 06 by Nathaniel Stern, CC BY-NC-SA 2.0At this year’s Summit, iCommons will be launching a new and improved Artist in Residence program, based on the success of last year’s undertakings by Nathaniel Stern, the Artist in Residence at the iSummit 2006. This year’s program will be bigger and better ‘ we’ll be expanding the program to include more artists, more collaboration and a dual exhibition ‘ in a physical space at the art workshop, Lazareti and in a virtual gallery in Second Life.

Essential to the success of the program is, believe it our not ‘ you. We would like you to suggest an artist from your country, whom we will consider when awarding the residency. Or even better, if you are an artist, don’t be shy, add your name too. All you need to do is click on this link to add an artist’s name to the iCommons wiki.

Based on the suggestions from the community, we’ll be picking two artists from the Croatian region and three international artists to participate in the residency. We’re looking for artists who produce both in the physical and digital world; we’re looking for individuals who engage with copyright in some way - either by using Creative Commons licenced content as their inspiration, or by licencing their work under CC; or artists who simply challenge the boundaries of copyright law. iCommons will strive towards choosing a diverse range of artists from different countries, using a range of media and from both genders.
During the residency, the artists will be exploring different themes around what it means to be an artist creating in a digital world. The following topics will be investigated during the residency, and a workshop will be run by the artists at the Summit, based on the following themes:
‘¢ Different working modes: how do artists work with open content in their medium?
‘¢ Different presentation methods: what is the archival value of art made available online?
‘¢ Sustainability models: how do artists embrace ‘copyleft’ but still manage to pay the rent?

Nathaniel Stern will be coordinating the artists in their conceptual journey. The residency will officially start two to three weeks before the Summit, as a ‘virtual’ residency over e-mail or chat, when all the artists will start conceptualising and discussing these themes. The artists will arrive in Dubrovnik one week before the start of the Summit, so as to begin the hands-on work of ‘creating’.

The deadline for suggestions on potential participants for the Artists in Residence program has been changed from Monday 12 February to Monday 19 February.

UPDATE:

Selection Process for the Artists in Residence program

PRE-MEETING preparation: Please review the list of suggested artists on the wiki page to get a good sense of the proposed artists and their work.

TO CHAIR: Nathaniel Stern

WHERE: Skype

OUTCOME: Nathaniel should have a good overview of the artists suggested by the community. He now gets a few days to put together a list of artists who best represent what we need from the Artist in Residence program, i.e. based on the criteria and the goals of the program, outlined above. Nathaniel and Tomislav will work together on assessing the proposed Croatian regional artists, and putting together a list of possible regional artists.

PUBLIC MEETING TWO Thursday 1 March GMT 4PM

AGENDA: Nathaniel will report back on the list of artists he has compiled. Nathaniel and Tomislav will also report back on the list of Croatian regional artists. The floor is open to discuss these lists, and debate on whether these are the artists will best serve the program’s goals.

To chair: Heather Ford

Where: Skype

OUTCOME: A list of 2 Croatian regional artists and 3 international artists plus a list of ’short listed’ artists, in the case that the ones we have chosen may not be able to attend.

FOLLOW-UP: iCommons will contact every artist on the list to confirm whether they are willing and/or able to be part of the residency. Based on whether all of the initial five artists are able to attend, we may have to contact the short listed artists. Once 3 international artists and 2 Croatian regional artists have been confirmed, an announcement will be made to the community.

Expected date of announcement: Thursday 8 March, if not sooner.
