Behind the iCommons logo

iCommons logo

We’ve had some great comments about the iCommons logo. My favorite from Alex Tarkowski, Creative Commons Poland, who said: “The logo is a hit - only pleasant connections in my brain with it!”

I wanted to write about the symbolism of the logo so that, even if you don’t like it, you can at least understand why we chose it.

The circle in the middle symbolises the iCommons community, our common vision about the growth of the global information commons and the event that brings us together every year. The petals symbolise the communities, organisations and individuals that come together to celebrate and grow the commons. The flower is symbolic of the flourishing of commons communities that grow from a combination of reliable licences, sturdy applications, relevant hardware and creative, local solutions.

Creative Commons graphic designer, Alex Roberts, designed the iCommons logo.
