Gilberto Gil to address iCommons Summit
We’re thrilled to hear that Brazilian Minister of Culture, and rock star extronaire, Gilberto Gil, will address iCommons Summit participants on the first morning of the event (Friday, 23 June). Gil has been a driving force behind Creative Commons in Brazil, the cc Sampling licence, and the exciting Pontos de Cultura (”Points of Culture”) project which will be discussed at the Summit. Pontos de Cultura is described by Creative Commons Chairman, Lawrence Lessig, in a blog entry he wrote after attending the World Social Forum in Brazil last year:
‘The ‘Thousand points of culture’ project (aims) to build a thousand places around Brazil where free software tools exist for people to make, and remix, culture. The focus is video and audio; no one’s much worried about Office applications, or the like. It is an extraordinary, grass roots movement devoted first to an ideal (free software) and second to a practice (making it real).’
In the “Create” workshop, participants will be able to use some of the tools developed by Pontos de Cultura, along with a host of other projects and organisations, to develop ideas for creative hubs in their local coffee shops, community centres, schools and shopping malls.
Make sure you register for the Summit, iCommoners - this is going to be one inspiring event!
